Estevan’s huge deposits of coal have been utilized to produce electricity and other forms of energy with its economic viability being enhanced due to the low cost of coal over the years. Coal is also used to produce Briquettes. However, with increasing demands for clean energy, the continued use of coal to produce electricity hangs in the balance. This, however, creates new opportunities for the use of coal using technology such as carbon capture- a technology which has been pioneered right here in Estevan to produce clean energy.
Additionally, other opportunities for diversification in energy (particularly alternative renewable energy sources) continue to present themselves. Estevan is well placed to take advantage of such opportunities with its prolonged periods of sunshine, vast, windy open space, sizable deposits of oil, and excellent location for geothermal energy.
